just like certain movies i like to watch overandoverandover...i have certain books i like to read overandoverandover...crime & punishment is one of them. i'm currently reading it for the fourth time. crazy, i know. well, the handmaid's tale is the new read. published in 1986, it's "a novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex...." the back of the book summarizes the story within as follows..."Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now...
Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force."
so...i am excited to read on. if anyone is interested in doing a read-along, i have a reading group discussion guide for this book. i would even be willing to wait till others obtained a copy from the bookstore or library. we could post on the strangefolk website under the clayton snb thread. (if that would be okay, autumn!) let me know girls!

AAAAAGGHHHh!!!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I actually just finished it a week or so ago. It always leaves me strangely quiet and creeped out, especially since I used to live in Boston, where it (supposedly) is set.
I'll discuss this with you anytime! My copy is even signed by Atwood. Have you ever seen the movie? Neither have I. I heard it's basically soft porn, but I still wanna see it.
